Or: How I Got Sued by a Robot for Stealing My Own Content

There’s a hidden button that quietly rules the creative internet. It doesn’t sparkle, doesn’t beep, and you’ll never actually see it. But once you cross it, you’ll know. That’s the magic of the Content ID system … it only reveals itself when you’re guilty, even if you’re not.

Let’s say you’re a musician or a video creator. You compose a piece, maybe add some ambient textures. You’re not stealing from anyone, certainly not Beyoncé or the Beatles. You even dabble with AI to generate some layers … just as a starting point … then tweak and remix everything by hand. You upload your track. And then: bam. Copyright claim.

The twist? You’re being accused by a machine, flagged by a system trained on data that may include your own work. It doesn’t matter if you created the original, or if you were simply inspired by yourself. The algorithm has spoken. You have plagiarised… you.

The Content ID system works like Shazam’s older, angrier sibling. It doesn’t recognize artistry – it detects patterns. Upload something that sounds like something else in its database, and you can lose your monetization, your reach, or your rights. There’s no courtroom. Just an automatic decision. Your only appeal is a form, a hope, and a wait. The process is as impersonal as it is baffling.

What makes this even more surreal is how these systems intersect with AI. Most generative AI tools are trained on massive datasets, much of which comes from the open internet. Public songs, royalty-free samples, ambient YouTube loops – even old SoundCloud uploads. If you’ve ever shared music online, there’s a non-zero chance fragments of your work are now feeding an AI somewhere.

So when you use one of these tools to make music, you might end up remixing yourself without even knowing it. And if that remix ends up sounding like a version of your own past – but one the AI system now “remembers” differently – it can get flagged as derivative. Not by a person. By the magical Content ID button.

And here’s where things go full Kafka: in many countries, AI-generated works can’t be copyrighted unless they contain “sufficient human authorship.” What qualifies? Changing a few notes? Tweaking a melody? Breathing on your laptop while it renders? Nobody knows, because the courts haven’t caught up. Which means ownership of AI-generated music is a legal Bermuda Triangle: it’s yours, it’s theirs, it’s nobody’s, it’s whatever the platform decides today.

This is the paradox we’ve stumbled into, we’re using machines trained on our own creativity to help us be more creative, only to find out we might not own the results. We trained the system to assist us. It thanks us by automating us out of authorship. And all the while, the platforms we upload to are more concerned with liability than fairness. They don’t have time to figure out who really made what. That’s what the button is for.

If you’re a creator, this feels like an existential glitch. What does it mean to “make something” if you can’t prove it’s yours? What if your own sound, your own aesthetic, your own artistic fingerprint … has been absorbed by the very tools you now use to make art?

You might be thinking this sounds dramatic. Maybe. But think about what artists leave behind. Not pensions. Not patents. Just work. Just songs, poems, pictures — small monuments to our existence. And if we can’t hold onto that? If it becomes something a bot can reproduce and reassign at will – was it ever really ours to begin with?

We are living in an age where authorship is fluid, attribution is automated, and credit is increasingly optional. You don’t have to be a lawyer to feel like something fundamental is shifting. You just have to be an artist.

So yes, you can get sued by a robot for stealing your own content. And the scariest part … The robot might win.

    How to outsmart AI?

    Can it relate to human contexts, tasks or empathy?

    Human beings have the ability to encompass and understand feelings of fellow human beings.

    Can AI emulate that or struggle with that capacity?

    1. AI makes mistakes, like wrongly accusing people of copying their own work, since it only matches patterns and doesn’t understand the full story. So, while it can be helpful and sometimes seem empathetic, like a cat, it can’t match the depth and authenticity of human empathy. This makes human understanding and creativity the best way to outsmart it… Which is not like a cat!
