The Craftsmanship of Light: NEON‑SIGN

A craftsman heats a glass tube, blows breath into it, and bends it by hand, one by one: “neon signs” like these are rapidly disappearing from the cityscape of today.

Based in Sapporo, photographer Tsubasa Fujikura has been following this vanishing light since 2008. His representative series, “NEON‑SIGN,” is not merely a record of the streets. It is a redefinition of neon signs as sculptures of light, set free from their original role as advertisements. What makes this work interesting is that he captures the three‑dimensional neon sign in a flat frame, then reconstructs it back into three‑dimensionality, allowing the sign’s charm to be sublimated into a new form. Originally signs meant to lure in customers, these works become, through his gaze, a revelation of the anonymous craftsmen’s outstanding techniques, their craft, and are reborn as objects with a fresh allure.

And there, too, is a deep respect for what is being lost, a respect that makes us re‑recognize the value and charm of neon signs as they disappear day by day. The flickering waver of gas light, the subtle distortions born from handwork: these are details that uniform LED light cannot reproduce. Fujikura captures them directly and, at the same time, in an extremely refined, aesthetic way, preserving the city’s memory vividly. Behind the completed image, he conveys to us the “maker’s warmth” and stirs our imagination toward the air of the place and the time when that neon once glowed.

職人がガラス管を熱し、息を吹き込み、一つひとつ手作業で曲げて作り上げる「ネオンサイン」が、現代の都市景観から、急速に姿を消しつつある。

札幌を拠点に活動する写真家 藤倉翼は、2008年からこの消えゆく光の造形を追い続けている。彼の代表作である「NEON-SIGN」シリーズは、単なる街の記録写真ではない。それは、広告という実利的な役割から解放された、ネオンサインの「光の彫刻」としての再定義である。

この作品の面白さは、立体であるネオンサインを平面的に切り取り、それを立体へと再構築し、元あるネオンサインの魅力が違う形で昇華されている点にある。本来、客を誘うための記号であったはずの看板は、彼の視点を通すことで、名もなき職人たちの卓越した技術「工芸」としての側面を切り取り、更に新しい魅力を発する作品に生まれ変わる。

また、そこに「失われゆくものへの敬意」があり、日々無くなっていくネオンサインの価値や魅力を再認識させてくれる。LEDの均一な光にはない、ガスが明滅する際の揺らぎや、手仕事ゆえの微細な歪み。藤倉はそれらをストレートに、かつ極めて美的に切り取ることで、都市の記憶を鮮明に保存している。完成されたビジュアルの背後にある「作り手の体温」を私たちに伝え、そのネオンがあった場所や時代の空気への想像力を掻き立ててくれる。
