The Cat and the Fox

Level 5 – (Eiken Level 4)

In a forest near a river, a cat and a fox had a problem.
“I found this log first,” said the cat.
“No, I found it first,” said the fox.
“I want to take a nap here,” said the cat.
“I want to rest here too,” said the fox.

The cat’s tail moved quickly.
The fox’s ears moved too.
They were both tired. They were both unhappy and annoyed.

“This is my log!” said the cat loudly.
The fox jumped on the log.
“Not anymore!” he said.

The cat tried to push the fox off.
The fox pushed back.
The cat made a loud sound. “Meee-ow!”
The fox snapped his teeth. “Snap! Snap!”

They rolled in the leaves. Their paws moved fast.
The cat jumped.
The fox moved down.
The fox made a high sound. “Yip! Yip!”
The cat yowled loudly. “Meow! Meow!”

At last, the cat stopped fighting.
The fox stood on the log.
“I win,” the fox said with a big smile.
The cat put her tail down and walked away.

The next day, it rained.
The fox was still on the log.
The cat stayed dry in a tree.

The wind blew.
The fox felt cold and shook.

The cat came down with a big green leaf.
It looked like a roof.
The cat put the leaf on the log.

“You can sit under this,” said the cat.
The fox looked at her.
“Even after we fought?” the fox asked.
“Yes,” said the cat. “It’s just a log. You looked cold.”

The fox smiled.
“Thank you,” said the fox.

They sat together under the leaf.
The log was big enough for both of them.

かわの ちかくの もりで、ねこと きつねに もんだいが ありました。

「この 丸太を はじめに みつけたのは わたしよ」 と ねこが いいました。
「いいえ、ぼくが みつけたんだ」 と きつねが いいました。

「ここで ひるねしたいの」 と ねこ。
「ぼくも ここで 休みたい」 と きつね。

ねこの しっぽが ぱたぱた うごきました。
きつねの みみも ぱたぱた うごきました。

ふたりとも つかれていて、かなしくて、いらいらしていました。

「これは わたしの 丸太よ！」 と ねこが おおごえで いいました。

とうとう、ねこは たたかうのを やめました。

ねこは しっぽを さげて あるきさりました。

つぎのひ、あめが ふりました。

きつねは まだ 丸太に いました。
ねこは きの うえで ぬれずに いました。

かぜが ふきました。
きつねは さむくて ふるえました。

それは やねの ように みえました。
