Sweet dreams

Level 5

It had been such a big day. Nat and Nip had been at the creek skimming rocks in the hot sun. Nat had to show Nip the right rock to pick to get the best skim. It had to be a bit flat. Then she had to show Nip the best way to throw a rock so that it went bump, bump, bump across the top of the creek. It had been loads of fun and Nip was quick to get the hang of skimming rocks.

When Nat and Nip got back from the creek, Nip’s mum had fried chicken, green beans and pumpkin for them to feast on. When Nip and Nat had eaten the meal, Nip’s mum told them to get to bed. Nip ran up the steps to brush his teeth. He had lots of teeth to brush and he had to scrub right up the back to keep his teeth from getting rotten.

Nat got in her pink singlet and rainbow pants that her Nan had given her for a gift. She had her pink pig to hug tight as she got into bed. Nip’s mum crept up the steps to tuck them in and flick off the lamp. “Night, night. Sweet dreams.”

Nat was quick to drift off to sleep. As she went into a deep sleep she was back at the creek. But the creek was bright pink. The creek was flowing with bright, pink soft drink with lots of fizz. On the creek bank she got sight of an object, but it was not a log or a tree. Just then Nat did a scream of delight.

The object was a whopping, golden treat laying on the creek bank. Next to the golden treat was a red Kit Kat and then a stack of red and green frogs. Nat had a big grin and kept thinking to herself, this must be a dream. I must be in the Land of Sweets!

Nip lay on his pillow and was quick to drift off to sleep too. As he went into a deep sleep he was standing on the creek bank, but it felt a bit odd. It was not mud that he was standing on but thick, soft snow. Across the creek was a snowman with a black hat on and lots of things with black wings playing in the snow. Nip tried to run to them, but the snow was too thick.

Nip got sight of a snow sled sitting on the top of the creek. He was slow to get to it as the snow was so thick. He slid the sled up the cold, solid creek and then sat on it. The sled did not sink. The creek was as solid as a rock. Just then the sled sped off with Nip sitting on it. It went zig zagging on the top of the creek. Nip held on tight and kept thinking to himself, this must be a dream. I must be in Snow Land!

A ray of sunlight was creeping in the window. Nat sat up. She had a peek to the left of her bed. Then she had a peek to the right of her bed. She did not see a creek running with soft drink, Kit Kats or red and green frogs. Nip sat up. He had a peek to the left of his bed. Then he had a peek to the right of his bed.

He did not see a snowman, a sled or thick snow that was as soft as fluff. Nat told Nip that in her dream the creek was pink. Nip told Nat that in his dream a snowman in a black hat sat on the creek bank. On the way back to the creek to skim rocks, Nip and Nat kept wishing for the dreams to be real!

スイート・ドリームズ

ナットとニップにとって、とても大きな一日だった。二人は、ジリジリと暑い日差しの中、川で石を「ピョンピョン」とはじいて遊んでいた。ナットは、ニップに「ペタン」と平らな石を選ぶとよくはじけることを教えた。それから、「シュッ」と腕をふって石を投げると、「ポンポンポン」と川の上を跳ねることも教えた。とても楽しくて、ニップはすぐに石はじきを「パッ」と覚えた。

川から帰ると、ニップのお母さんが「ジュージュー」とフライドチキンを揚げて、「シャキシャキ」のインゲン豆と「ホクホク」のかぼちゃを用意してくれていた。二人が「モグモグ」とごちそうを食べ終わると、ニップのお母さんは「もう寝る時間よ」と言った。ニップは「タタタッ」と階段を駆け上がって歯を磨きに行った。ニップはたくさん歯があるので、「ゴシゴシ」と奥までしっかり磨いた。

ナットは、おばあちゃんからもらったピンクのタンクトップと虹色のズボンに着替えた。ベッドに入ると、ピンクのブタのぬいぐるみを「ギュッ」と抱きしめた。ニップのお母さんが「そろーり」と階段を上がってきて、二人を布団に入れて、「カチッ」とランプを消してくれた。「おやすみなさい。いい夢を見てね。」

ナットは「スーッ」と眠りに落ちた。深い眠りに入ると、また川に戻っていた。でも、その川は「ピカピカ」の明るいピンク色だった。川には「シュワシュワ」の炭酸飲料が流れていた。川のほとりで何かを見つけたけれど、それは丸太でも木でもなかった。ちょうどそのとき、ナットは「キャー！」とうれしさの声を上げた。

そこには「ドーン」と大きな金色のお菓子が転がっていた。その隣には「パリッ」とした赤いキットカット、そして「プニプニ」の赤と緑のカエルのお菓子が山積みになっていた。ナットはにっこり笑って、「これは夢に違いない。きっとお菓子の国にいるんだ！」と思った。

ニップも枕に頭をのせて、「スヤスヤ」と眠りに落ちた。深い眠りに入ると、川のほとりに立っていた。でも、なんだかちょっと変な感じがした。足元は泥ではなく、「ふかふか」の雪だった。川の向こうには黒い帽子をかぶった雪だるまがいて、黒い羽の生き物たちが「パタパタ」と雪の中で遊んでいた。ニップはその子たちのところへ「ダダダッ」と走ろうとしたけれど、雪が「ズボッ」と厚すぎて進めなかった。

ニップは、川の上にそりが「チョコン」と置いてあるのを見つけた。雪がとても厚いので、そりまで行くのに「ヨイショ、ヨイショ」と歩いた。冷たい固い川の上にそりを滑らせて、座ってみた。そりは沈まなかった。川は「カチカチ」に固かった。そのとき、そりが「ビューン」と急に走り出し、ニップを乗せて川の上を「ジグザグ」に進んだ。ニップはしっかりつかまって、「これは夢に違いない。きっと雪の国にいるんだ！」と思った。

窓から「キラキラ」と朝日が差し込んできた。ナットは起き上がった。ベッドの左側を「そーっ」とのぞいた。右側ものぞいた。でも、そこには炭酸飲料が流れる川も、キットカットも、赤と緑のカエルもなかった。ニップも起き上がった。ベッドの左側をのぞき、右側ものぞいた。

でも、そこには雪だるまも、そりも、「ふわふわ」の雪もなかった。ナットはニップに、「私の夢では川がピンクだったんだよ」と話した。ニップはナットに、「僕の夢では黒い帽子の雪だるまが川のほとりに座っていたんだ」と話した。二人はまた川に石をはじきに行く途中で、「夢が本当だったらいいのにな」とずっと思っていた。
