Snowy Map

Level 5

Nami had taken a long trip to visit her friend Kai.
As she stepped off the plane, a cold wind rushed at her face, whoosh whoosh!
“Cold!” Nami shouted.

Snow covered the ground like a big, white rug.
The trees wore snow hats, and the sky was silver and grey.
Snowflakes fluttered down, flake-flake, swish-swish, softly landing on her coat.

Kai was waiting, running across the snow in thick boots that crunched crunch-crunch, crunch-crack on the ground. She wore a red scarf and grinned when she saw Nami.
“I promised I would come!” Nami said, and the adventure began.

That day, the girls had lots of fun in the snow.
They slid down a big hill on a sled with a swoosh whoosh!
They built a snowman with a black hat and a smiling face, patting the snow pat-pat.

Then they ran into the woods, making tracks with their boots that crunched crunch-crunch and crunch-crack in the deep snow. The trees stood tall and still, listening to their laughter.

After a hot meal, the girls got ready for bed.
Nami brushed her teeth, climbed into her soft warm bed, and hugged her blue bear tight. Soon, she drifted off to sleep.

In her dream, the woods glowed with soft light.
The wind rustled through the branches, shush-shush, swish-swish.

A big white owl perched on a branch, wings wide, eyes golden.
It seemed to know Nami’s name. The owl flew high above the snowy land and saw all the paths Nami and Kai had made.

Nami smiled in her dream, thinking of the owl watching them play.

The owl nodded slowly.
The snow had kept their tracks, forming a secret map without them even knowing it.

The wind drifted through the trees with a swish-swish whisper, and the snow sparkled.
Shapes began to appear: Nami’s sled, the snowman, the trees, and the trails they had left behind.

The owl showed that by following their footprints, they could always find their way back to the best parts of their day.

Morning sunlight peeked into the room.
Nami sat up, looking around. There was no glowing snow. There was no owl on a branch.

Kai was still asleep by the fire, her boots beside the bed.
Nami smiled quietly, thinking of the snow map they had made yesterday.

Kai slowly opened one eye, remembering the snow map too.

Together, Nami and Kai were ready to go outside again to make more maps, more tracks, and more memories.

ナミのゆきのぼうけん

ナミは ともだちのカイに あうために、ながい たびをしました。
ひこうきから おりると、つめたい かぜが ふいて、ふうう！
「さむい！」 と ナミは さけびました。

ゆきは ちかちか まっしろな じゅうたんのように じゅうたんのように しきつめられていました。
木(き)たちは ゆきのぼうしを かぶり、そらは ぎんいろと くろいろでした。
ゆきの ふぶきが ちらちら、しんしん と おちて ナミの コートに あたりました。

カイは まっていて、あつい ぶーつを はいて ザクザク、ザクザク と ゆきを あるきました。

そして ぼうけんが はじまりました。

くろい ぼうしの にこにこ ゆきだるまを つくって、ゆきを ポンポン と たたきました。

それから もりに はいり、ぶーつで ザクザク、ザクザク と ふかい ゆきを ふみしめました。

あたたかい ごはんを たべたあと、ふたりは ねるじゅんびを しました。

ゆめのなかで、もりは やわらかく ひかっていました。

ふくろうは ナミの なまえを しっているようでした。
ふくろうは ゆきの うえを とび、ナミとカイが つけた あしあとを みわたしました。

ナミは ゆめのなかで ふくろうが あそぶふたりを みていることを おもいました。

ふくろうは ゆっくり うなずきました。
ゆきは ふたりの あしあとを のこし、しらないあいだに ひみつの ちずを つくっていました。

かぜが きの あいだを さらさら、さらさら と ふき、ゆきは きらきら ひかっていました。
かたちが あらわれました。ナミの そり、ゆきだるま、木、ふたりの のこした あしあとです。

ふくろうは あしあとを たどれば、さいこうの ひとときを もういちど みつけられると おしえてくれました。

あさ、ひかりが へやに さしこみました。
ナミは すわって まわりを みました。
ひかる ゆきも ふくろうも いません。

カイは まだ かじの そばで ねむっています。
ぶーつは ベッドの よこに ありました。
ナミは しずかに ほほえみました。
きのう つくった ゆきの ちずを おもいだしました。
